PAINTED DESERT SHEEP COAT TYPE AND EARS
|
The Painted Desert Sheep is a breed that is double coated. They will produce and grow a wool coat in the winter time. In areas of really low temperatures the sheep may grow a thicker coat during winter than sheep in areas of mild wintertime temperatures. But come spring the wool is shed and the slick shorter hair coat is left behind. With this trait shearing is not required. The sheep do all the work for you. Young sheep sometimes don't shed completely their first year, but after that they should shed completely each spring. If shedding is not complete by second year this could be a trait of the sheep having to much wool breed influence in it's background. With this shedding trait these sheep are rarely plagued with external parisites, nor have the problem of ''wool strike" which can plague wool breeds that require shearing.

Rams are known for their beautiful manes on the front of their necks. Some
rams will shed partial amounts to all of their manes during summer months, and
may even shed their entire mane. But some rams will have a nice mane year
round. Rams can also have longer hair on their shoulders and down their back.
Some ewes can have a mane, but this is not a common trait and is never as
thick and full as the rams.
